Compass, Compass ESL and Asset Testing

Compass, Compass ESL and Asset Testing
  • What is COMPASS Testing?  COMPASS is a computer based placement test, measuring skills in Reading, Writing, Mathematics and an essay. It helps determine placement in your courses. It is also used as an alternative THEA test for students who have never taken the THEA test. Students usually take about 4 hours to complete all parts of the exam. The computer part is "user-friendly", so no experience with computers is needed.  Assessment Center staff will assist you in beginning COMPASS and will be available if you need additional help.  The Compass ESL is given to students registering for English As Second Language classes and is free of charge.
  • Where can I find study materials for COMPASS?   Study materials for the Compass test are available online at:
http://www.compass-test.com/ (Can be purchased for $23.50)  http://www.actstudent.org/testprep/index.html (Free sample questions.)
  • When can I take the COMPASS?  COMPASS can be taken on any day that our Assessment Center is open, but you must arrive at least 4 hours before closing time.  Students need to get a referral slip from Admissions, which authorizes the Assessment Center to give the test.  Students also must bring a photo ID and receipt of payment from the Business Office.   Please note that the Business Office is usually not opened on Saturdays - please call to verify hours (281-401-5303).
  • When will I get my scores?  You will get your scores for the Compass test immediately upon completion. Your essay score might take at the most two days to be returned. Your test scores will be explained further when you meet with an advisor to select your courses.
  • The Asset test is a paper/pencil test that is given by individual sections and is timed at 25 minutes per section.  Please call to verify testing hours: 281-401-5314.  Find more information at the ACT web site: http://www.act.org/asset/index.html or you can download their study guide at: http://www.act.org/asset/pdf/StudentGuide.pdf

If you need an “official” copy of your scores to take to another college please inform the proctor on duty PRIOR to starting your test.  The Willow Chase Assessment Center does not fax scores to other colleges.  This is done in an effort to observe Student Confidentiality guidelines set within the District.  Please contact our Admissions office at (281) 401-5370 for information regarding transcript requests.
