Veterinary Technology Certificate Program
The certification program is designed to enable the student to earn a Certified Veterinary Assistant (CVA) certificate after successfully completing at least 33 hours of required courses in the Veterinary Technology program. Credits earned towards the certificate can be applied to the Registered Veterinary Technician program at Lone Star College–Tomball.
The certificate program is designed to provide a more practical approach to the practice of veterinary technology and is intended for students that have limited needs for future registration with the Texas Veterinary Medical Association and the Registered Veterinary Technician (RVT) designation.
Students seeking the CVA degree are students with an interest primarily in private practice. The individual earning the certificate is viewed as an entry-level employee with formal training in large, small, and exotic animal practices. However the certificate holder can choose to continue their education towards the registration level receiving an Associate of Applied Science degree. All hours towards the certificate program are transferable to the AAS degree.
General Guidelines
Entry into the Certified Veterinary Assistant program is similar to the Register Veterinary Technician program. Admission examinations such as the ACT, SAT, THEA, etc. should be completed and should have been reviewed prior to application. After examination review, remediation in Math, English or Reading should not be required for the entering CVA student. If admission examinations do indicate the student is in need to remediation, the student must successfully complete those requirements before applying to the Veterinary Technology program.
Admission Procedure
The admission procedure is identical to the student pursuing the Associate or Applied Science degree. (See above)
Progression Requirements
Students are asked to follow the curriculum from first to last semester, as each subsequent semester courses in veterinary technology will be predicated on the successful completion of the previous semester.
