Honors Courses

Honors Course
An Honors Course is an entire course section comprised completely of students and taught by a member of our Honors Faculty. Academic emphasis is on encouraging students to present scholarly papers, to use primary sources, to participate in alternative learning strategies, to think critically, and to experience related cultural and social activities outside of the classroom. This is in addition to traditional coursework.

All students must complete an Honors Project and an Honors Presentation in class at the end of the semester. Membership in the Honors Program is not required to register for an Honors Course, but transcript evaluation, high school records and current GPA will be evaluated by the Honors Director prior to the first day of classes. Students who may not be successful in the course, based on gathered information, may be contacted by the Honors Director for assistance in course selection.

Levels of Recognition
Successful completion of an Honors Course could lead to several levels of recognition:
  • You will receive honors designation on your transcript for each course.
  • If you complete 9 hours of honors credit with a cumulative 3.5 GPA and 25 hours of community service, you will be recognized at commencement and receive the designation of Honors Scholar on your transcript. You will receive silver and mauve chords to wear at graduation.
  • If you complete 15 hours of honors credit with a cumulative 3.5 GPA, you will be recognized at commencement and receive the designation of Honors Program Graduate on your transcript. You will receive a medallion to wear at graduation
  • If you complete 15 hours of honors credit with a cumulative 3.5 GPA and 25 hours of community service, you will be recognized at commencement and receive the designation of Honors Scholar with Distinction on your transcript. You will receive a medallion and gold and mauve chords to wear at graduation.
