Course Descriptions

All Basic Track nursing students take the following courses over a two-year period. For a more detailed description, refer to the 2006-2007 Lone Star College System Catalog.

RNSG 1523 - Nursing I: Introduction to Professional Nursing for Integrated Programs Introduction to the profession of nursing including the roles of the registered nurse with emphasis on health promotion and primary disease prevention across the life span; essential components of the nursing health assessment; identification of deviations from expected health patterns; the application of a systematic, problem-solving process to provide basic nursing care to diverse clients across the life span; and applicable competencies in knowledge, judgment, skills, and professional values within a legal/ethical framework. This initial course focuses on basic human needs; health related learning needs; nursing process, concepts of mental/physical health, decision making, scientific principles, critical thinking, and resource management as a basis for nursing action. Assessment, communication, cultural and developmental diversities, medication math skills, and principles related to pharmacology, and basic nursing skills are taught in selected classroom, laboratory, seminar, and clinical activities.

RNSG 2504 - Nursing II: Integrated Care of the Client with Common Health Care Needs Application of a systematic problem-solving process and critical thinking skills to provide nursing care to diverse clients/families across the life span with common health care needs. Opportunities for collaboration with members of the multidisciplinary health care team. Content includes applicable competencies in knowledge, judgment, skills, and professional values within a legal/ethical framework.

RNSG 2514 - Nursing III: Integrated Care of the Client with Complex Health Care Needs Application of a systematic problem-solving process and critical thinking skills to provide comprehensive nursing care to diverse clients/families across the life span with complex health care needs including, but not limited to, complex childhood/adolescent diseases, complicated perinatal care, acute mental illness, complex perioperative care, serious adult health problems and health issues related to aging. Emphasis on tertiary disease prevention, health maintenance/restoration and collaboration with members of the multidisciplinary health care team. Topics include the role of the nurse as client advocate and coordinator of care and applicable competencies in knowledge, judgment, skills and professional values within a legal/ethical framework. Content includes complex health problems and pathological processes that occur in all age groups, related to mental and physical illness, obstetrical problems, and end state or emergency health problems. Clinical activities are offered in acute care settings, with added long term and community-based activities.

RNSG 2535 - Nursing IV: Integrated Client Care Management Application of client assessment skills, critical thinking, and independent nursing interventions to care for diverse clients/families throughout the life span whose health care needs may be difficult to predict. Emphasis on collaborative clinical decision-making, nursing leadership skills, and client management. Topics include the significance of professional development, trends in nursing and health care, and applicable knowledge, judgment, skills, and professional values within a legal/ethical framework. Human needs and nursing role development continue as a focus, with long-term health problems in diverse individuals. Students use the nursing process for making nursing judgments and setting priorities. Discussion of current issues affecting health care and additional legal/ethical aspects enhance the students personal and professional growth. Course includes management of chronic health problems, delegation, utilization of resources, and case management.

RNSG 1361 - Nursing I: Clinical A health-related work-based learning experience that enables the student to apply specialized occupational theory, skills, and concepts. Direct supervision is provided by the clinical professional.

RNSG 1362 - Nursing II: Clinical A health-related work-based learning experience that enables the student to apply specialized occupational theory, skills, and concepts. Direct supervision is provided by the clinical professional.

RNSG 2361 - Nursing III: Clinical A health-related work-based learning experience that enables the student to apply specialized occupational theory, skills, and concepts. Direct supervision is provided by the clinical professional.

RNSG 2362 - Nursing IV: Clinical A health-related work-based learning experience that enables the student to apply specialized occupational theory, skills, and concepts. Direct supervision is provided by the clinical professional.

RNSG 1301 - Pharmacology Introduction to the science of pharmacology with emphasis on the actions, adverse effects, and nursing implications of each drug classification. Topics include the roles and responsibilities of the nurse in safe administration of medications within a legal/ethical framework.

RNSG 1172 - Preparation for Basic Care Study of the concepts and principles essential for demonstrating competence in the performance of basic nursing skills for care of diverse clients across the life span. Topics include knowledge, judgment, skills, and professional values within a legal/ethical framework. *Students who have completed the health science program in high school, are certified as a nurses aide or emergency medical technician, or as a medical assistant will be exempt from this course and receive articulated credit.

RNSG 1119 - Integrated Nursing Skills I Study of the concepts and principles essential for demonstrating competence in the performance of nursing procedures. Topics include knowledge, judgment, skills, and professional values within a legal/ethical framework.

RNSG 1129 - Integrated Nursing Skills II Study of the concepts and principles necessary to perform intermediate or advanced nursing skills; and demonstrate competence in the performance of nursing procedures. Topics include knowledge, judgment, skills and professional values within a legal/ethical framework.

RNSG 2173 - Advanced Nursing Skills Study of the concepts and principles necessary to perform intermediate or advanced nursing skills; and demonstrate competence in the performance of nursing procedures. Topics include knowledge, judgment, skills and professional values within a legal/ethical framework.

RNSG 2230 - Professional Nursing Review and Licensure Preparation Exploration of leadership and management principles applicable to the role of the nurse as a provider of care, coordinator of care, and member of a profession. Includes application of knowledge, judgment, skills, and professional values within a legal/ethical framework. Course incorporates concepts from all previous nursing courses, in preparation for licensure examination and professional nursing practice.
